First off – Happy 4th of July. Ya, this post is late but let’s pretend we’re back on the 4th of July. What did you do on the 4th of July? Anything fun? We went to dump our tanks on the way out of the Riverside Campground and guess what? The “sani-dump” was full. Happy 4th of July.
As we are learning, this is a poorly run campground. We don’t recommend it at all. I called every number on the office door since no one seems to actually work in the office. When calling the very last number listed, someone answered. She said she would send someone over but that was all she could/would do. The guy showed up pretty quickly actually and when he saw the situation, he went from saying it would take 30 minutes max to fix it to saying it will take at least an hour to fix. No guarantees. We had a long drive time so we set off hoping to find a station along the way where we could tend the tanks.
We came upon Piper’s Glen Resort in Fort Fraser and were able to dump for $5 Canadian. The lady there was really nice and said someone checked into her campground the prior night after going to the one we just came from. Apparently someone also took their site and wouldn’t move.
Cracked windshield.
Stopped at Smither’s where two of the three gas stations in town were out of gas. Walked around a bit to stretch our legs and got a coffee at a cute little place called Bugwood Coffee. That coffee was amazing. Then we stopped at the Sausage Factory and got some lunch and sausages to have for dinner some upcoming night.
During the afternoon part of our drive we got stuck in a massive thunder/lightning storm. We saw the beginnings of a fire from a lightning strike from the road but had no cell service to report it. The rain was intense.
We ended up boondocking at mile post J162.9 at the Avalanche Memorial called Red Flat Rest Area. There was a bicyclist there hunkering down waiting for the rain to stop. He had a small tent and kept his bike dry by storing it in the bathroom. He’s Azule from B.C and he looked like he needed a beer. He was very appreciative of the Sockeye Dagger’s Falls IPA we gave him.
There were so many mosquitos. So many. We settled in for the night after ensuring Azule had everything he needed for the night, including protection from bugs and beers.
