Day 8 – A Day to Enjoy Jasper

So Mike has been steeling my day numbering format for posts. Hopefully it’s not confusing anyone too much. If it is, let Mike know.

Today we have a free day in Jasper. We slept in until 830a. Last night was a bit chilly, but we stayed pretty comfortable.

Before leaving for the day, we made a picnic lunch to take on our outings. We were hoping to get to do some paddle boarding on Lake Edith – and boy did were we in for a for a treat! We had the whole beautiful, clear, blue-green lake pretty much to ourselves for the whole morning. It was so peaceful and pretty out, a really great morning for some paddle boarding and the best setting ever. While Braxton and I paddled, Mike got out the drone and took some amazing birds’ eye view photos.

A floodgate must have opened at about noon because it was then that our quiet day was jolted back to the real world when a bunch of Canadian’s came driving in with their, (I think it was Canadian Country) music, blaring and their BBQ set up in the back of their truck. They wasted no time firing up the grill and getting their burgers going right from the back of the truck. It was pretty funny watching one of them drive around looking for a more level spot while the other one was in the back of the truck flipping burgers. Kids were wondering around, dogs checking everything out. It was time for us to pack up and let them have their Canadian wilderness to enjoy as they rolled into the Canadian Day weekend.

Our next stop was Maligne Canyon. We hiked around to view the canyon and the water falls and flows that formed it. Amazing views and a great hike. We then decided to “wet our whistle” as Grandpa Virgil used to say, and went to the Teahouse, aka Wilderness Kitchen for a beer and a snack.

After that, we headed back to our camp and Mike fired up the smoker to do smoked pork chops. He also smoked some carrots to go in our mixed green salad that we topped with a creamy cilantro dressing. Pretty tasty!

Our camp site didn’t have water or sewer hookups, as mentioned in the last post. According to our tank numbers it was about time to “tend to the tanks”, so we hitched up and took the Airstream to the sani-dump and water fill station. In order to maximize everything, I hopped in the shower as soon as we got there and took a shower while the boys dumped and filled. Worked like a charm! It felt like we were one shower ahead of the game!

Back at camp we had a quiet evening. We have an early morning tomorrow, but at least we are all hitched up. We will do one more “tending of the tanks” in the morning and then hit the road to head to Grand Prairie.
