Today we headed back toward Whitehorse and on the way we actually saw some wildlife! We saw a fox, a bear, and a deer. This was the highlight for the day as we haven’t been seeing as much wildlife as we thought we would.
Along the way, we stopped in Haines Junction. We had a great lunch at the Village Bakery. We each picked what we wanted from their selection of wraps, sandwiches, and fresh made soups. They also have a bunch of baked goods and we just couldn’t leave without getting a loaf of fresh made sourdough bread and some cookies.
Before leaving Haines Junction, we stopped to get gas and “tend to the tanks”. We’d been boondocking for a couple days and figured we’d be boondocking for at least tonight as well. The gas station had a nice corner location, but the sewer dump and water fill situation was… creative, I guess? Below is an image from google maps. The circle is the dump station and the “x” is the water fill. So after getting gas, we had to work our way over to the dump station. We were lucky that Mike had a very, very long water hose. Otherwise, we would have had our trailer maneuverability skills really put to the test.
In the picture below, there’s not nearly the traffic that was there when we were there, but you can get the idea of the triangle between the gas, dump, and water fill. Triangles are a tricky shape to follow with a trailer!
After an afternoon of driving, we decided to boondock at a rest area at milepost 1328.5 km (DC 828.7), near the Southern Lake area. It’s really pretty here but the black flies are awful! We had pizza for dinner. There’s something fun about being able to cook and eat a pizza in the middle of a rest area.
