The rain continues… It rained all through the night and morning. We left Talkeetna today, headed to Girdwood. Girdwood is about 37 miles South of Anchorage, AK. It’s a small town, but is home to the popular Alyeska Ski Resort.
On the way to Girdwood, we stopped at the Costco in Anchorage and Fred Meyer to revamp our supplies. It’s an interesting thing in Anchorage: alcohol (including beer and wine) is paid for separately from your other purchases. For example, at Costco the alcohol section is the first area upon entering the store. If you are buying alcohol, you have to pay for it before moving on to the rest of the store to finish your shopping.
We’re staying at Bird Creek Campground while in Girdwood. It’s a first come, first serve campground and we were lucky to get a great spot.
We went on a hike around the campground after we got settled in our camp spot and found some really nice paved trails, many with views of the train tracks and the ocean. Bird Creek Campground, situated on Turnagain Arm which is one of only two places in the U.S. where bore tides occur. Bore tides happen in this area because of the shallow, narrow, and long shape of the inlet. It’s when the outgoing tide actually collides with the incoming tide. Unfortunately we didn’t get to see this today. Maybe tomorrow. It happens a couple times a day and apparently some people like to surf it – the waves can get big.
After our hike we had Tater Tot Taco Salad for dinner. It’s an early night tonight because we wake up bright and early tomorrow to go on the train!!
