We’re still talking about yesterday’s exciting halibut fishing adventure. Today was another fun day in Homer. We did some cleaning around the Airstream, (yes – there are still chores when vacationing in an RV), then we set out to get some coffee. Ugh, we don’t understand – it has been so hard to find good coffee on this trip.
We finished our disappointing coffee and then set out to see the Russian Orthodox Church, located a short drive from Homer in a little place called Ninilchik. The Holy Transfiguration of Our Lord Chapel was built in 1901. It’s a historic bluff-top structure reminiscent of the Russian-American Company that settled in the Kenai Peninsula back in the 1820’s. Because it was closed, we didn’t get to see inside. It was, however, a nice day to wonder around the grounds. There’s a cemetery adjacent to the church where you can see lots of vegetation and examples of the traditional Russian white-picket fences around some of the gravesites.
After the church visit, we headed back to Homer to see some of the areas we hadn’t yet seen. A day of site seeing warranted a stop at one of the local breweries. Grace Ridge Brewing is a cute brewery tucked away from the main road. The beer was decent and Braxton really appreciated the “fast” Wi-Fi. They offered a nice snack plate that included locally smoked salmon, cream cheese, local marionberry chipotle jam, and crackers. Braxton really enjoyed it and consumed a majority of it leaving only crumbs for Mike and me.
Mike and Braxton got a propane tank refilled while I made dinner. I kept it simple. We had pasta with marinara sauce and broccoli. Brownies were for dessert.
Tomorrow we head to Anchorage for more adventures!
